Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Laser Hair Removal

Booking your first laser hair removal session can feel like a big step. We get clients walking in nervous and walking out asking why they did not do this years ago. Here is what actually happens, what to do before and after, and what kind of results to expect.

Before the appointment: how to prep

Two to four weeks before: stop waxing, plucking and threading the area. Hair needs to be in the follicle for the laser to target it. Shaving is fine.

Twenty four hours before: shave the area cleanly. The laser targets the follicle, not the surface hair, so a fresh shave gives the best result.

Day of the appointment: no fragrance, no moisturiser, no sunscreen on the area. Skin needs to be clean and dry.

If you are taking any new medications or have had a recent change in your medical history, tell us at the consult. Some medications make the skin photosensitive.

What happens at the appointment

First time: 15-minute consultation. We discuss your skin and hair, take a brief medical history, and do a small patch test on the area. The patch test is to confirm the laser is safe for your skin.

Treatment: the laser tip is chilled, which numbs the area as it works. Each pulse feels like a quick warm flick. Smaller areas (lip, underarm) are over in 5 to 10 minutes. Larger areas (full leg, back) are 30 to 45 minutes.

After treatment: we apply a soothing gel. The skin will be slightly pink for an hour or two.

Does it hurt?

Less than waxing. Most clients describe it as a quick warm flick. The chilled tip helps a lot.

Bony areas (shin, ankle) and very sensitive zones (Brazilian) are the most uncomfortable. If you are very sensitive, we can pause and adjust the settings.

Aftercare

Twenty four hours: no hot showers, no saunas, no swimming pools, no exercise that makes you sweat, no sunscreen on the area.

Forty eight hours: gentle moisturiser is fine. Avoid scented products.

One week: no waxing, plucking or threading the area. Shaving is fine.

Sun: use SPF 30+ on the treated area for the next four weeks.

How many sessions do you need?

Six to eight sessions is the typical course for full hair reduction. Sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart depending on the body area.

Hormone-driven hair (chin, upper lip, sometimes neck) can need more sessions, especially if hormonal changes (PCOS, pregnancy) are involved.

Most clients see 50 to 70 percent reduction by session four. Sessions five to eight target the stubborn remaining 30 percent.
