How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last? A Lash Care Guide for Dandenong Clients

Eyelash Extensions

If you have just booked your first set of eyelash extensions, the question we hear most is: how long will they last? The honest answer is, ‘it depends’. But there is a science to it, and there are five things you can do to make a set last longer. Here is the lash care guide we wish every client had on day one.

The short answer

Most clients get four to six weeks of wear out of a full set of eyelash extensions. Refills every two to three weeks keep them looking full all the way through.

Classic and hybrid sets typically last toward the longer end of that range. Volume and mega volume sets are more delicate and lean toward the shorter end.

Why extensions fall out

Your natural lashes shed in a 60 to 90 day cycle. Each natural lash carries one extension, so when the natural lash falls out, the extension goes with it.

On any given day you naturally shed two to five lashes from each eye. After three to four weeks, that adds up to a noticeably thinner lash line – which is when most clients book a refill.

Five things that shorten lash life

Rubbing your eyes. Mechanical pressure breaks the bond between extension and natural lash.

Oil-based products. Cleansers, makeup removers and moisturisers with oils dissolve the lash adhesive over time. Switch to oil-free products.

Sleeping on your face. Side-sleepers and stomach-sleepers crush the lashes against the pillow. Try a silk pillowcase or train yourself to sleep on your back.

Mascara on extensions. The extensions already give you the volume of mascara. Adding mascara on top means you are removing it later, and the removal damages the lashes.

Skipping the brush. A clean lash wand, used every morning, fluffs the lashes back into place and prevents tangling.

Five things that extend lash life

Wash them daily. Yes, daily. A small amount of oil-free lash cleanser, a soft brush, rinse and dry. Clean lashes hold extensions longer than dirty ones.

Use a silk pillowcase. Reduces friction overnight.

Avoid steam in the first 24 hours. Showers, saunas, steamy kitchens. After the first 24 hours, normal life resumes.

Brush them every morning with the small spool brush we provide.

Book your refill on time. The earlier you refill, the more of the original set we can save.

When to refill, when to remove

Refill at two to three weeks. We add new extensions to the natural lashes that have grown in since the last visit, and we replace any twisted or damaged extensions from the previous set.

If a set has gone four weeks or longer without a refill, sometimes the better option is a full removal and a fresh set. We will give you the honest call when you arrive.
